Artist
It is said that an artist is finished by 30 years old, but others say that she cannot really paint until the age of 40!
The critical ten years between those dates are often just filled with learning to live, looking for a studio, finding the right balance between partnership and solitude, friendship and sexuality. Earning a living is devastating if one has no independent income and many sacrifices have to be made to keep one's vision true.
The more mature paintings in this exhibition are all about music. Several changes in my surroundings have challenged my comfort zone, but music has been the one constant throughout my life. Often listening to music has brought the muse, inspiring emotion, the subject of a painting, its colours and intention. I hope you will sense this as you look at the work.
‘What is the modern conception of pure art? It is to create a suggestive magic that contains both subject and object, the external world and the artist himself.’ Charles Baudelaire, L'Art Philosophique
‘Art is a human activity consisting in this, that one man consciously by means of certain signs, hands on to others feelings he has lived through and that others are infected by those feelings and experience them.’ Tolstoy, 'What is Art?'
