Lacquer
Trained at the Beaux Arts in Aix-en-Provence
After having painted in oil for a long time, I discovered Japanese lacquer and the rankaku technique (eggshell inlay) about twenty years ago.
This fascination for this material and its incomparable effect led me to train with Asian Masters and particularly two Vietnamese Masters Huy and Tuyet, professors at the Beaux Arts in Hue (Vietnam).
This long apprenticeship in this very demanding medium (about twenty layers of lacquer are necessary to create a work) allowed me to develop a more European and contemporary approach to this age-old discipline.
The “Shadow and Light” series presented for Gare-Expo combine lacquer with another ancestral Japanese technique, yakisugi (burned wood).
This marriage highlights textures and contrasts: the lacquer, so smooth and so shiny, opposes, harmonizes, echoes the matt and rough qualities of the yakisugi.
My pictorial universe is rooted in emotional experience – how to transcribe an attraction, a momentum, a pulse of energy…
