'The round trips of an Urban Sketcher'
I have belonged to the international movement of Urban Sketchers since 2012. I am a member of the association of USk Barcelona and USk Languedoc. Our approach is to draw on the spot in our notebooks, normally in groups, and share our drawings and our experiences in social networks.
I live between Barcelona and Mons-la-Trivalle and I carry my sketchbook everywhere. I meet other sketchers wherever I go.
Drawing on the fly with a time limit takes special techniques and precise equipment. My work is very self-taught, but I have not stopped training since 2012 with sketchers from Barcelona and elsewhere to deepen my research. I attended the USk International Symposium in Barcelona in 2013, Porto (Portugal) in 2018 and Amsterdam in 2019.
I belong to the Association Courant d’Art. An association of artists and artisans from the Jaur and Orb valleys. Our works are on display and sale at the headquarters of the association in Olargues where I have been leading sketching courses since 2019.
I have exhibited my sketches several times in Barcelona and also in different places in the Jaur Valley.
I have published a book of my sketches: “Between Catalonia and Occitanie. The back and forth of an urban sketcher” Anna Ishtar 2020.

Els obtained her high school certificate at the academy in Bruges and a diploma in graphics from the St. Lucas Institute in Brussels.
She worked as a freelance whilst travelling in the Far East. During a stay in Africa in 1994, she began to paint large frescoes. Following that she participated, as artistic collaborator, in “Baobab” world-class organised by the ‘New World’ N.G.O.
After much travelling Els and her partner decided to settle in Colombia. Enchanted by the magic of the tropics, they bought a farm in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia. After several years they opened the ‘Carpe Diem’ guest house. In this idyllic setting the visitors could enjoy the full the richness of nature.
Els discovered the perfect place to develop her passion for painting, in a very personal style. Her fascination for the surrounding jungle is clearly revealed in her work.
On becoming a mother and with the growing tensions in the region, she began to paint the children. Her strongly expressive works play with the light and shadow and vibrant colours of the Caribbean sun. Her canvases radiate human warmth and joy of children in a burst of spontaneity.
Due to the growth of violence in the region, they had to abandon their home in May 2002. It is once again a mountainous region in which they have established themselves, but this time in the south of France.
With a strong element of nostalgia the children of the Sierra will be portrayed and exhibited in Belgium, France, Tunisia and Columbia.
The Mediterranean culture and ‘joie de vivre’ are inspiring Els to create a new body of work, inspired this time by the vineyards and the production of wine.
