Artist
Jennie Smith is originally from the UK but has lived in the south of France since 1989 where she has been strongly inspired by the landscapes, architecture, sea and climate of this beautiful region. She comes from the south west of England where she obtained a degree in art following her studies in painting and ceramics.
She spent three years in Cyprus where she taught art in a secondary school and also to adults. On her return to England she taught sculpture in a centre for the blind. After that she used art as therapy for mentally and physically handicapped young people in a college where she also started to teach. As a result of this she obtained a teaching diploma.
Since her arrival with her family in the south of France, she has taught at numerous summer schools in the region for students and artists coming from a variety of countries such as England, Germany and the States as well as from the four corners of France. This was in addition to the drawing and painting classes out of school that she gave to children in the region.
More recently she has concentrated on her own work. Her water colour and oil paintings, as well as her ceramics, bear witness to the colours and light in this region.
Her working process varies according to the situation. The weather in this region frequently allows painting outside for direct observation into sketch books. These studies can then be transferred to studio work which tends to be semi figurative, often onto a larger canvas. This requires planning and ‘thinking’ time as opposed to the immediate reaction when painting directly from life.
